Case: 01080005

Class 3a

Bowfishermen have early afternoon encounter while on Sabine River.

Report Details

Occurrence date: April/2006
Location: Panola County, TX
Nearby/Vicinity: Carthage
Time / Conditions: 1:00-2:00p.m. Cool/clear
# of Witnesses: 2

Witness Account:
A friend and I were bowfishing on the Sabine River. We had been drifting down stream all morning looking for fish to shoot with our new bowfishing bows/gear. We would use the trolling motor to guide use and the current to pull.

Sometime around lunch(12pm) we heard some noise in the tree line on the north side of the river bank, we didn't think much of it, there are deer and wild hogs all over this area.

A few hours later we came around a bend of the river and I looked up on the bank and saw something moving. I never said anything to my friend because I was unsure of what I had seen.

As we drifted on down I saw a large dark figure walking threw the tree line and I turned to find my friend looking at it as well. We never said a word we just watched.

As we continued to watch this large creature move slowly through the trees I got a better view. I was looking at the back of this creature and it was large. My friend and I are both 6'3" and 230-250 lbs, we are pretty good size ourselves. This creature was at least 7' tall and a good 350 lbs. It had very dark brown hair on it's body maybe 2-3" long. Its head had longer hair and it was almost black from what I could see. It wasn't moving very fast and looked to be having a hard time walking. We watched for what was about 2-3 minutes until it was out of sight. We quietly started back upstream. We didn't want to piss it off, the bank on the river was only about 4' - 5' tall and we were within 100 yards.

We talked about it after we got the boat loaded and started back for home in the truck. We both had agreed that we seen the same thing and couldn't believe it.

Hand/foot prints:
We never went back to the sighting, that's his area and he can have it.

Sounds:
Just the noise of the tree limbs and leaves it was walking through.

Additional observations:
No smell, but the river has a smell of its own.

Investigator's Observations

Investigator(s): John Morley

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred on the Sabine River in Panola County, Texas, April 2006.

I interviewed the witness at length about his report; I believe he is a reliable witness and has reported an incident to us that likely occurred.

The witness discussed with me how he and a friend were floating down the Sabine River in East Texas bowfishing. After hearing some noise on the bank around noon time, they thought nothing else about it and continued their float. The witness indicated to me that at about 3:00 p.m., he looked up above the bank and at that time spotted movement.

He reported seeing a large figure walking on two legs and moving through the trees a short distance from the bank of the river. His friend was also looking at the figure at about that same time. The witness maintained that he could only clearly see the back of the subject which he estimated to be 7 feet tall and weighing perhaps 350 pounds. The witness remembered thinking, "What if it sees me, where will I go?"

The witness remarked that after several minutes of watching, he and his partner used the troll motor to begin moving back up the river from where they had come. After a good five minutes of this, they started the outboard motor and returned to the boat ramp.

The witness stated that the subject in question had dark hair on its head and down over its shoulders, but from there down the hair was a lighter color. He also thought the lower part of the legs and feet might have been darker in color. I am unfamiliar with any other reports of a similar description, yet the witness was adamant about this feature.

During my discussion with the witness, it was my impression that his overall statement was extremely compelling. I was able to confirm the location of the event. The witness offered to return to that location on the river as he feels he could find the exact spot where this occurred. I am currently in the process of expanding my investigation to include an interview with the other witness.

This report will be updated with any additional comments as a result of future interviews or field investigations derived from this report.
