Witness Observation

I was headed north on Hwy 59 into Atlanta Texas. I couldn't have been more than 2 to 5 miles south of Atlanta at the time. I was the only one on the road for as far as I could see. I came to an S curve in the road. It went to a curve to the right and then to a curve to the left. I made the first curve and when I was coming around the other curve I saw this huge beast just step over a six strand barbed wire fence. I slammed on my brakes and then just took off. I was scared to death. This was no man and damn sure not a bear. I only got a look at it for no more than 4 or 5 seconds. When I made the curve it was stepping over a 4' fence like it was nothing. It saw me and didn't run, but just turned its head and continued to walk down the fence line. I should have taken a longer look, but I was really freaking out at this point, so I just drove on into Atlanta.

Sounds

No, my windows were up.

Additional Observations

It had to be at least 8 to 8 1/2 feet tall and weigh no less than 500 lbs. I weigh 230 lbs and it was at least twice my size! Its hair was a really dark brown and not as long as I thought it would be. It looked to be covered with 6 to 8 inch hair. Its chest and abdomen didn't seem to be as hairy and I could see its eyes, nose and mouth, so I assume they were not hairy either.

Time and Conditions

1:30 to 1:50 a.m - Wooded, cattle ranches and cattle dairies all though that area. It had been raining earlier that day. Rains had quit. The night was clear.

Investigator's Comments

Daryl Colyer

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in Cass County, Texas, along Highway 59 between Linden and Atlanta, in August 2004.

I interviewed the witness about his report on the evening of August 10, 2004, the same day as he had the sighting. He is a truck driver and twice weekly drives the particular route on which he had the encounter. It is a midnight run originating in Tyler and concluding in Texarkana. I have driven this very route many times en route for Atlanta, the place where I was born. It was just prior to Atlanta on Highway 59 that the witness saw what he believed to be a bigfoot.

Northeast Texas is a place of many bigfoot anecdotes, so the subject was not unknown to the witness. The witness remarked that upon seeing the subject, although he had always suspected its existence, he then realized that it was truly no myth. He was amazed that he had been so lucky to have seen what he truly believed was a bigfoot.

The witness knows that his report is only anecdotal, and there will be many who will not believe it, but he is unperturbed. In his own words, he knows what he saw. Further, he was in awe and struck by the sheer size of the subject and how it easily cleared the barbed wire fence before walking down the fence line.

The way that the subject looked at the witness frightened him. He did remember an eye shine, and described it as a "photo eye shine." The witness went on to further describe the subject as being dark in color, and probably a "dark brown." The head seemed to be somewhat crested.

I inspected the site on 11 August 2004, and found no discernable, definitive evidence of a sasquatch. However, there were a couple of indistinct impressions in the soil, and the vegetation along the fence in the vicinity of the crossing had the appearance of having been trampled by something large for a stretch of 100 feet or so. Even though rain had fallen in the area, no distinguishable tracks were found. The general area is indeed one that fits within what is thought to be typical habitat. Creeks, marshes, and thick, nearly impenetrable woods surround the location of the encounter. In addition, the Sulphur River is just a few miles north of the site. We also noted a pipeline right-of-way in close proximity that crossed the highway running from the southeast to the northwest. In looking at the satellite images of the area, the pipeline right-of-way can be seen to run literally through at least five miles of East Texas back country.

Class 1c
An investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot by a very reliable observer is a distinct possibility, tangible corroborating evidence is documented, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
Class 1d
A visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility involving two or more reliable observers, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
Class 2
Investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility, the observer is exceptionally trustworthy, professionally trained, and experienced in the outdoors and/or is accustomed to looking for and recording details (e.g., biologist, anthropologist/archaeologist, ranger, trapper/tracker/seasoned hunter, bird watcher, game warden, naturalist, law enforcement), and other explanations can be reasonably excluded.
Class 3a
Investigator determines that a visual encounter with a sasquatch/bigfoot is a distinct possibility, the observer is credible, and all other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
Class 3b
Unidentifiable vocalizations were reported and there is accompanying tangible evidence to possibly indicate the presence of a sasquatch/bigfoot, the observer is very reliable, and other sources can be reasonably ruled out.
