Witness Observation

Hurried on the way to school. I was about 50 yards away from intersection when I saw something cross in front of me. It was somewhat foggy, but I saw it as plain as day. Its eyes were like that of an animal. They glowed red when my headlights hit them. There were no sounds heard. I damn sure did not get out. The creature just passed in front of me in a hurry as I was. It did make eye contact and disappeared into the thicket on the side of the road. At the time, this was rural McKinney. Now this area is developed.

Additional Observations

Large scale, around 7' or so. Gray to light brown in color. Its coat was matted and not well groomed, patches of missing fur. Eyes were apparent and glowed red when light hit them. It did not seem frightened by my presence. It kept about its business. I did not get out of the vehicle.

Time and Conditions

6:30am - Foggy, wooded, there were 2 hedgerows with open hayfields to the east and west.

Investigator's Comments

Jason Svoboda

This report was published as a result of an investigation into an incident that allegedly occurred in Collin County, Texas in what was then an undeveloped rural setting, near McKinney, in October of 1986.

Both during and after the interview with this witness, my impression was that he was truthful. I am confident that the witness was certain that he encountered exactly what he described in his original report and to me in the interview. He also said he felt very relieved to tell someone who would take him seriously.

It is worth nothing that at the time that this incident reportedly occurred, the area was rural and undeveloped. It has undergone dramatic growth and development since the mid 1990s and now bears little resemblance to the setting there in the mid 1980s. It is not inconceivable that in the mid 1980s an encounter such as this could have occurred just as described, given the proximity to other rural areas where rumors have persisted of similar encounters. During the mid 1980s, there would have been numerous 10-to-20-acre lakes in the area, built in the 1950s for flood control. The area also had an abundant share of pecan orchards and hayfields. It was a typical northcentral Texas rural environment, replete with creeks, ponds/lakes, dense riparian wildlife travel courses and farms.

As the witness recalled, he was driving south on Farm to Market Road 1461 approximately 50 yards from the intersection with Highway 380. He remembered seeing a figure cross in front of his car traveling in a westerly direction. The subject appeared to be seven feet tall, with a light brown coat of hair and no noticeable neck. The witness said the subject appeared to look “raggedy.” As he recalled, the subject moved with a “long purposeful stride,” appearing passive, yet showing no fear. The witness estimated that the visual encounter lasted approximately 20 to 30 seconds at a distance of 15 to 20 yards.

The witness also mentioned that on occasion in the area, there were rumors of small dead cattle being found in odd locations such as in trees and on top of a round hay bales.
