Witness Observation

The weather was cool and sunny. There were thick woods on both sides of road. On the passenger side there was a dip for runoff and the property was fenced, the owner has longhorns on that property but the property was wooded. On the driver side there was a deeper runoff where the brush was real thick, there were downed trees on the edge and no fence.

I was driving a 1993 Saturn. I had let my daughter sit in the back with both of her friends and they were laughing and talking, enjoying the last few minutes before I took them home 20 miles away. They were around 15 at the time, I had to have them home by 12:00 noon and that’s why I remember the time.

As I came out of the dip the road curves to the passenger side and before the road curves to the other side. I am facing the road and looking into the thicket ahead, and 60 to 80 feet from my car in the thicket I see what I first thought was the haunches of a horse moving around I could only see the top part. What I saw had short reddish hair and was like 7 to 8 feet high. Then I remembered I didn’t see a tail. As I go up this curve toward this thing I start to look at it a little closer and then this thing that I thought was a horse turns around and crouches down and tries to hide behind a little tree and it’s sitting there looking at me. It had a face and reddish hair on top of its head and the eyes followed me and I drove within 15 to 20 feet of it and I did see it crouching down looking at me as I went by. The thing was big in a crouched position and I couldn’t have been driving more than 20 mph and I don’t remember if I slowed down even more or not but I kept going. I was so scared that I didn’t even stop at the stop sign and I was also scared I would flood the car since it was a standard [transmission]. The girls looked up and I couldn’t talk and I was finally able to talk. I asked them if they had seen anything and they said no and I told them I thought I had seen something in the woods, then I told them it was nothing. But I did see something there and it saw me. If I had persisted with my daughter, she would have never been able to live there ever again.

Later that day I told my husband about it and he didn’t believe me. He started telling me he saw a ghost dressed in blue in the front yard when he went to work in the mornings. So I didn’t mention it again.

Well after that I didn’t go into the woods anymore. We had 2 ½ acres, we cleared about 1 acre of our land and I wanted to clear all of it. I use to work to clear little by little. My husband stopped helping me because the more I cleared the more he had to mow. But I didn’t want the woods that close to the house I wanted to see what was out there. Needless to say, my clearing days ended after that.

I started closing the curtains at night and I put lights all around the house. When I drove home I would turn on the high beams to make sure there was nothing out there since our property was not fenced. And I know what is out there -- deer, hogs. I have chased billy goats and those longhorns out of my yard before and I know what they look like up close since.

We moved to West Texas in 2007.

We are located at the top of a little hill the back part of our subdivision land is lower and there are creeks and ponds back there and there some parts that have really thick woods. About a mile down FM 1725 there is another road called Dabney Bottoms that when it rains a lot you cannot drive thru here, even the road is graded dirt thru that part. Another 2 miles down the road on FM 1725 the Sam Houston National Forest starts, my husband use to hunt there and he said there was places on the Dabney Bottoms side of the forest that were really deep and very thick that you couldn’t hunt there. He also said he had been in an area back there where he come across a place that smelled really bad and it looked like a place where several big things slept there, all the brush was flattened out. He just remembered smelling that smell at other times and always wondered what that was, but he never saw anything except for the smell.

I never even considered that it would have been a bigfoot, never entered my mind. Then one day in February this year my husband John asked me to describe what I had seen a long time ago. Then he asked me to read some of the articles on this website and the same fear came over me and couldn’t believe other people were describing what I saw back then.

Investigator's Comments

Mike Mayes

This investigation was conducted as a result of an incident that allegedly occurred in San Jacinto County off Gale Haven Road in the fall of 1997.

I interviewed the witness in depth about her experience of over a decade ago. During the interview, it was obvious to me that recalling the event evoked much emotion in the witness. At times, she seemed to have difficulty relaying the event to me, but was able to get through it. She apologized for this and said the incident had frightened her so much that it was still difficult to discuss. I detected no signs of deception and it is my assessment that the witness is truthful. I am convinced that she saw something that she believes was a sasquatch.

She began by telling me that her then 15-year-old daughter had a couple of friends over for a visit. The witness recalled that both visiting girls had to be home by noon. This being the case, she estimated that it was about 11:15 a.m. when she and the kids loaded into her 1993 Saturn to take the girls home.

The group had not traveled more than a mile or so when the witness spotted movement in the forest ahead. She saw something that appeared to be facing away from her; she initially thought she was seeing the flanks of a horse. The witness realized that the subject was not a horse when it turned around to face her oncoming vehicle. Upon spotting the vehicle, the subject squatted down and seemed to be attempting to conceal itself behind a small tree and some brush; however, the subject was simply too large to be effectively hidden by the available cover and the witness watched it watch her as she passed by it. It was so large, the witness claimed, that even in a squatting position, the top of the subject's head appeared to be at the same height as the top of her vehicle.

The witness recalled that she was traveling slowly, about 15-20 mph, to negotiate a bend in the road and slowed down even more when she spotted the subject. As a result of her slow speed, and the fact that it was broad daylight, the witness was certain that she got a very good look at the subject. She described an upright animal about 7 feet tall covered in orange-reddish hair. The closest animal she could compare it to would be a massive orangutan. The witness said it was very muscular and thick, and she particularly remembered a set of massive shoulders.

The witness explained that she was extremely frightened by what she had seen and did not stop the vehicle to investigate. She claimed she was so afraid of stalling her car, which had a manual transmission, that she actually ran a stop sign a bit farther down the road.

The witness asked the girls, all of whom were in the back seat talking, if they had seen anything. None of them had seen the mystery animal. The witness did not say anything more to the girls regarding what she had seen.

Upon her return home, the witness told her husband about what she had seen. He initially did not believe her and thought she was trying to pull a prank on him. The husband teased her by saying that he had seen something strange too: a ghost in the yard.

The witness did not talk about it much after that but was often afraid while driving in heavily forested areas and even on her own property. The couple moved to West Texas in 2007. It was only this year that the husband saw an episode of MonsterQuest, which caused him to reconsider his position regarding what his wife claimed to have seen back in 1997. The husband did some online research after watching the program and came across the TBRC website. After finding reports from San Jacinto and surrounding counties of visual encounters with animals very similar to what his wife had claimed to have spotted, the husband began to wonder if there might really be something to her claims after all. The husband alerted the wife to the reports on the TBRC database and strongly encouraged her to file the report.

Although he was not present during the wife’s alleged visual encounter, I also was able to talk at some length to the husband. During the course of the discussion, the husband disclosed that he is a retired law enforcement officer and that the couple still owns property near the sighting area. The husband does believe that his wife had an experience for which there is no conventional explanation. He believes she is telling the truth about the event.

The area where this report originates has a long history of reported sightings of upright hair-covered animals matching the classic description of the sasquatch. The TBRC continues to investigate and research this area closely to this day.
